Glorious! This aristocratic stately home is well known locally for it’s particular style of creative fun. Come here for a heady combination of glamour and eccentric British life.

Pylewell is steeped in history and there are many stories that can be told about it’s life and development through the ages. Staying here is to go back in time, the 1940’s, the 1920’s and the late 18th century are alive and well here. Make sure you bring your black tie, smoking jackets and wigs… this isn’t a place to hang back…

The whole place is yours. You can take 3 bedrooms for couples or 6 for singles. There are 10 in total. Each has an ensuite bathroom – many the size of a normal house large bedroom. All the bedrooms along the front of the house have wonderful views over the Solent and the Isle of Wight.

The house has 27 acres of gardens and a further 15 acres around the ornamental lake and arboretum – famous for the collection of Australian and Asian trees. A collection of rhododendrons was gradually established on the banks of the lake of the lake between 1912 and the early 1920s, at which time the entire gardens had reached their most elaborate stage.

The house is available during COVID times as a private rental because of the significant limitations on weddings, for which it would normally be fully booked for.

more about this place...

Inside: expect huge ancestral oil paintings, parquet floors, gold leaf decoration, beautiful sculptures, bold wall papers and everything is big. The sitting room that we have photographs of here is a small study, to seat 6. The main sitting room is huge, it would seat 40…! PICTURE COMING. You are welcome to use it.

Unlike many stately homes, the kitchen is useable and not just set up for caterers. It’s not the most beautiful room in the house but it’s certainly functional and has a 3 door AGA, a normal oven, fridge, freezer, plenty of space to prepare things. It’s not a stainless-steel-everywhere commercial set up.

There is a kitchen table in the kitchen to seat 8, and in the dining room there is a long table for seating up to 40. This will be set up as tables for smaller groups when you come.

Heating – this is an important feature for a big house! There is functional and well used central heating here. The house will be heated for you. We also set and light the main fires in the house for your arrival, you will need to keep them topped up with logs (provided free) through the day/evening.

You are welcome to choose the bedrooms that  you with to use. Most guests will want the honeymoon suite and there are 9 other fabulous bedrooms in either the west or east wing. Each has it’s own bathroom.

Staff – You will be met and shown around the house on arrival. During the weekdays the office will be manned but you won’t be disturbed since they have their own entrance. There are staff on the estate who can help in an emergency.

House keeping support – you may prefer to have a house keeper each day to help you.  There are some excellent local private caterers who can cook ‘at home’ for you or deliver for you.

Good to know:
The garden balustrades are deteriorating in some places. If you are wandering about the garden, please be aware of the stonework structure by the ha-ha.
Please do not climb the trees, they are precious and many are important specimens.
No smoking inside please, but outside is fine.
No fireworks here, we are in the National Park and have to comply to their best-practice please.
Dogs are welcome but need to live in a cage in the kitchen and are not allowed on carpeted areas (the kitchen and hallways downstairs are fine).
There is no jetty here so you can’t come by boat… helicopter is fine – plenty of landing space.

what makes this special...

The location here is fabulous. The house has wonderful views down through the parkland and over to the Isle of Wight and across the Solent.

The gardens here, particularly the arboretum, are of national importance and you can’t miss going to wander around the old ornamental ponds amongst such a collection of beautiful specimens. Spring and autumn are particularly special.

Local area…
Walk through the fields by the house and you’ll reach the East End Arms in a 20 minute amble.

Lymington is often in The Times ‘Top 10 places to live in the UK’.  Obviously we are totally biased and agree. It is marvellous. The quality of life here is very good. The town is surrounded by National Park to the north, coastal otherwise. There is a good mix of industry (boats) and retail. Less obvious is the connection to the rural workings of the National Park itself.

The community here is very diverse in its interests and the town really does make sure that everyone is catered to…it is always busy with something going on from the Saturday market to St Barbe Museum, with multiple play parks and of course cafe and restaurants galore. And if you manage to get through all that, then you could always jump on the ferry to the Isle of Wight – just a short 30 minute journey across the Solent.
