The Pig Shed is a family friendly, pet friendly holiday cottage in East End, a pretty hamlet, near Lymington in the New Forest.

This rustic shed is filled with lovely things. Central to the space is a giant, beautifully presented four-poster bed.

Next door, the gastro pub The East End Arms is perfect for special family meals, or those who need to escape to ‘walk the dog’ and have time out with the papers!

Walk to the beach in 1km. It’s sand, shingle and silt for the salt marshes, attracts thousands of migrating birds through the year. It is a wonderful place for some quiet time. The views to the island are magical and on a peaceful day there is no better place to be. Dogs are welcome here too.

In 2014 Ploughmans and the Pig Shed (together) was No. 2 in The Times Travel supplement for Best Family Self-Catering in their Castles, Cottages and Cabins article.

more about this place...

We love the ‘Shed’, rustic and eccentric, with its four-poster bed across the garden. It’s a peaceful and quiet spot. With the pub next door, you won’t need to cook. You can even book in for breakfast.

The space is all about the bed. It’s an ornate, white-curtained four-poster affair with not one, but two mattresses. Fairy lights hang up for you. The wood burner will warm your toes. Giant over-size armchairs are ready to scoop you up for some book reading action. This is your time out zone.

Need extra beds? Stay here and you’ll get a bunk bed in the little bedroom. There is a shower room dressed in scaffold boards.

Want to sun bathe. Then open the bifold doors for a very effective sun-trap.

The kitchen is basic. There is no sink (do your dishes in the bathroom or leave them for us when you leave). There is a little wood-burner here for warming plates on top. A fridge and freezer, toaster, kettle and a great pub next door, or Lymington is 3 miles away with some great foodie places for you.

Outside the garden has been designed for children under 9s, with dens, several twigloos, tunnels, outdoor toys but it’s our glorious mini gypsy caravan which is the show-stopper for cuteness. Drag and drop it around the garden. Position it by the big kitchen window if you want to be able to read your Sunday paper in peace. For those who want to bring horses, there are also two stables with concrete standing and a gravel yard.

Families

Children are especially welcome. The garden has been designed for toddlers to explore and play. It is fully enclosed. There is a marshmallow brazier for kids to use – or take to the beach. Two cots and highchairs are available. Kids will love dens, tunnels, mini Gypsy Van (under 8s can stand in it). There are a few garden games.

Best for…

Couples or families with small kids wanting to enjoy the countryside.

What are the quirks here? (We like to be brutally honest)…

If we have guests staying in the main house also, then you’ll need to be sensitive about how you use the garden. Otherwise the  house and shed spaces are totally separate.

what makes this special...

The Shed is 3 miles from Lymington. And 12 minutes drive to The Pig Hotel. That means that you can stay here and eat out every meal and still have a fabulous romantic (and fairly budget) weekend with no washing up. Surely life doesn’t get much better than this?

If you have little children with you the Shed comes with a bag of kit for fancy dress and some toys. So you might get a tiny bit of a lie in…

We love walking from here to the beach at Tanners Lane. You can walk to Lymington along the coast and country lanes from here in about an hour.

“We were three families with young kids (5 kids under 4) and we had a lovely time. The outdoor spaces are great for young kids and the location near enough to London not to be a chore and with a raft of local activities - the 3 year olds went on a 1 hour hack at nearby stables and we all went to the beach one day too, plus seeing the ponies of the New Forest (not so easy to see from the car seats though).”

Julia and family, stayed June 2018

This beautiful house was to bring my family together to celebrate my daughter's 7th birthday and my parent's 70th. It was an absolutely fantastic weekend. I can't really comment on the local area as we barely left the house and garden for 48 hours. All rooms were comfortable, super-clean and nicely decorated. The living space for our big gang was brilliant. The kids basically didn't come indoors all day and ran around like loons in the garden and caravan... AND got to feed a friendly donkey who came to hang out by the gate for a while. Lovely bathrooms and wood burner for a chilly evening. We put the 70 year olds in the 'shed' - the most beautiful shed I've ever seen to give them some well deserved space from the grandchildren. They even had a lie in! All in all, a magical weekend in a beautiful, spacious, well equipped (OH the toys they have!) house. Thank you. We shall return.

A wonderful 4 night stay at Ploughman's Cottage. Plenty of space for running around for our busy 3 year old and plenty of comfort for our 6 month old including high chairs and toys etc. Great location, near to a lovely secluded beach and what more could you ask with a lovely pub next door. Would definitely stay again and absolutely recommend.

Jenna from Carmarthen, March 2018

We had a weekend family party, small children through to birthday boy who was 70. Everyone had such a good time, the house is so welcoming and comfortable. Keeping small children happy is key to everyone else being able to relax so finding a hoard of toys is a good start. A large and random collection of crockery and glassware also suggests that a slight accident isn't going to destroy the matching set! We spent most of our waking hours in the house in the kitchen diner, round the table chatting, eating and enjoying the view through the huge window into the garden. We really enjoyed the quiet surroundings, and the East End Arms next door was a bonus for our celebratory meal. We would all like to go back.

The Ploughmans Cottage

Lymington Rd, East End, Lymington SO41 5SY, UK

the location...

Lymington is often in The Times ‘Top 10 places to live in the UK’.  Obviously we are totally biased and agree. It is marvellous. The quality of life here is very good. The town is surrounded by National Park to the north, coastal otherwise. There is a good mix of industry (boats) and retail. Less obvious is the connection to the rural workings of the National Park itself.

The community here is very diverse in it’s interests and the town really does make sure that everyone is catered to…it is always busy with something going on from the Saturday market to St Barbe Museum, with multiple play parks and of course cafe and restaurants galore. And if you manage to get through all that, then you could always jump on the ferry to the Isle of Wight – just a short 30 minute journey across the Solent.
